THE ANCIENT WORLD HUMS HERE...

Who are we?

Marrowsong is a literary journal focused on sacred narratives drawn from mythology, folklore and fairy tales across the globe, with a particular emphasis on traditions that aren't represented in Western literary spaces. Each piece is hand-illustrated, turning words into a beautiful, living work of art. We publish quarterly, in December, March, June, and September.

OUR STORY

Throughout history, myth & folklore were never truly about explaining the world; in every culture, they were about making mortality liveable. Wasn’t death more bearable when there was a way to chart a path across dark rivers of fire to paradise? Weren’t heroes metabolising the idea of death, moulding it into a malleable concept shaped repeatedly until it went from unknown to known. The idea of Marrowsong sprung from that first seed, and indeed, we believe stories of old live in the small bones of the wrist, engraved onto the sternum like pages of a book opening to a beating heart filled with life. Bones outlast flesh, & act as oracles of the past, telling stories of how the dead once lived & what they once believed.

Myth is never actually discovered in books or scholarly explorations. It certainly lives there, but for humans, stories are etched into our bones & through our blood; it is the ichor that turns mortals into immortals through the power of legacy. We steep ourselves in myth, our ears filled with prayer and hope as we slip into this cavernous world, with stories of women turned monsters and gods who return from the dead to become kings. We inherit mythology, and we begin to use lore to shape our own cultural traditions, mutating into tangible practices: oral history, fables, and even fairy tales.

Across the world, people have carried stories far longer than any archive has existed, which are often lost: gathered by colonisers and empires as curiosities or superstition instead of sacred history. Print has a huge lacuna for many people and communities that don’t get the chance in traditional publishing to tell their sacred & ancient stories. Marrowsong turns toward that absence with the aim of filling it through a decolonial lens, asking who has been telling these stories, who was left out of the telling, & what changes when the people who inherited them tell them on their own terms.

✦ What We Seek

We are a fully digital, illustrated literary platform. We focus on written pieces related to mythology, folklore, and fairy tales. Think retellings, original myth-inspired fiction, poetry, and scholarly-adjacent essays. We are looking for lush, mystical, evocative, sensorial, lyrical tonality in our pieces. We accept submissions from all nationalities and cultures; diversity is not only welcome here but celebrated. We do not accept work that depicts graphic violence, gore or sexual violence in explicit detail. Many sacred stories carry hard themes, and we will consider work that treats them with restraint. Our illustrators are half of this endeavour, and we respect the sanctity of survivors and celebrate their courage in writing about these experiences and overcoming, our illustrators are asked to render these moments, so we ask that they be handled in ways that can be illustrated with care.

✦ The Illustration Promise

If our editors accept your work, we will put you in touch with our illustrator so you can see how your story translates into art, and so they can understand your vision and bring your words to life. Our aim is for every piece to feel rich in colour, texture, and detail, inviting readers to linger the way they would over a luxury art book, but with real literary sensibility, and made for readers everywhere. You will receive image copies of your final, fully illustrated piece to share with friends, family, and on social media. The illustration remains the property of the illustrator, so please share it and credit them, and don’t sell it or use it commercially or in any republication without the illustrator’s written permission.

✦ Rights, Pay and Other Guidelines

✦ Rights, Pay and Other Guidelines

On rights: we ask for exclusive English-language rights (including audio rights) for six months. After that, you're free to republish the piece elsewhere, with a credit line noting it was first published in Marrowsong. We'll consider stories that have previously appeared in another language, as long as they have never been published in English.

We are strictly against the use of AI. Our team does not use AI to evaluate or illustrate your work. We will not accept any pieces written or conceptualised using AI.

Right now, we're not able to pay contributors. Paying the people who write for us is a real goal as we grow, and we're working hard toward it, but we're not there yet.
